Dr. Drew Pinsky Reveals Battle with Prostate Cancer

Dr. Drew Pinsky has spent years helping patients with their addictions. But the doctor and VH1 star had a battle all of his own.

Pinsky revealed that after having a biopsy, the doctor was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“Lo and behold, I have cancer,” Pinsky, 55, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I was doing Lifechangers” – a daytime show on The CW – “and my HLN show was going. My wife and I had this great relationship, very active sexually. This could screw everything up. It was a terrible feeling.”

Radio and TV host Dr. Drew Pinsky has gone public about his two-year bout with prostate cancer. The host of Westwood One’s long-running “Loveline” says he underwent surgery in July and is now cancer free.

The good doctor credit his wife, Susan Sailer Pinsky, for providing him with support and for prodding him to go seek medical care when something was amiss.

“We’re all bad as males. I convinced myself I could do my own primary care,” he said. “These are very complicated issues. The message I want to give out is that this is still an art. So much of the good outcome for me was the result of people following their intuition, including my wife.”

Pinsky says he underwent surgery in July 2013 to remove his prostate and is now cancer-free.

“I’m cancer free,” he says. “The erectile function is normal, sex drive is normal, bladder works normally. And I don’t have to worry about prostate cancer.”

“It was a brutal surgery but I was home in a day and back to work in a week,” Pinsky said in an appearance on CNN Wednesday morning. “There’s so much that can be done to prevent these things from being devastating.”
