EDM is a Big Hit at Billboard Music Awards!
After watching the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, it’s become clear that there’s plenty more room for EDM outside of the club. Naturally Taylor Swift cleaned house, again, following the release of her juggernaut album, 1989, but now she has some company at the top. Crooner Sam Smith has blown up across the radio since his beginnings with Disclosure, and hip-hop/dubstep violinist Lindsey Stirling is also poised to take the world by storm. This new high-energy brand of mood music is reviving the romance of the dance all across the nation and giving rise to a new generation of electronic artists.
Disclosure has been soundtracking dancefloors and bedrooms since they exploded onto the scene in 2012 with their smash single “Latch” featuring Sam Smith. And then there’s Flume’s remix of the duo’s track “You and Me,” featuring Eliza Doolittle. While it is undeniable that “Latch” is a romantic gem, it’s the “You and Me” remix that landed on this infographic as one of the top 10 songs to hook up to. Between the smooth, polished beats and Eliza Doolittle’s impressive vocal contribution, it’s not hard to see how they found themselves rubbing shoulders on the list with the likes of the XX, Coldplay, an Chet Faker. Coldplay’s “Magic” almost made the list of top romantic tunes, especially since the band took home the Billboard Award for Top Rock Album for their 2014 record, Ghost Stories.
Disclosure has been kind enough to grace fans with a new banger of clubbed-out goodness called, “Bang That.” The Lawrence Brothers claim that this tune will not be on the new record, but if it’s any indication of where they’re going then everyone has plenty to be excited about. The group is also set to perform a rare DJ set at the Movement music festival in Detroit this month.
Frequent Disclosure collaborator, Sam Smith recently cleaned house at the Billboard Music Awards, taking home three trophies including Top New Artist and Top Male Artist (view the full breakdown from the show here). Disclosure themselves were also nominated for three awards, but failed to take home top prizes in any of their categories.
So why is Stirling an important name to watch this year? The talented violinist received the award for Top Dance/Electronic Album at the awards show. In addition to that, her performance of “See You Again” alongside Wiz Khalifa was one of the most memorable moments from the Billboard Music Awards. Not just because it was a spot-on performance, but because it was a touching tribute to the late Paul Walker. Stirling seamlessly transitions from emotive string-swept ballads full of heart and emotion like “See You Again” and “Shatter Me” but manages to balance the feels with triumphant dance themes that make her music perfect for any occasion.
The charts, critics, and fans have spoken, and it’s clear that electronic music is here to stay. Whether it’s those looking to shake it off or share a sensual moment, there’s an award-winning (or at least nominated) song made just for you.
