Andy Cohen Reveals He Had Skin Cancer

On Friday, Andy Cohen revealed while co-hosting Live with Kelly, that he had a skin cancer scare. Cohen revealed the news to bring about awareness and to thankto Kelly Ripa for encouraging him to see a dermatologist.

“I want to say, by the way, that I have to shout you out for something that you don’t know I’m going to shout you out for. But I had this black dot on my bottom lip that you and I were at a party for Anderson’s mom in April. And you said, ‘You have a black dot on your lip. I don’t think that’s something good,’ ” Cohen told Ripa.

“Well I had never seen it before and you know I pay attention to people, and I had never seen it on your lip before. Mark [Consuelos] had never seen it,” Ripa, 46, said about spotting the dot on Cohen’s lip.

“The two of you were dogmatic that I get it checked out and I didn’t because I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m sure it’s nothing. It’s just a black dot.’ And she kept on me,” the Watch What Happens host continued.

Ripa continuously reminded Cohen to get the spot checked out and when he did, it saved him from a prolonged battle with melanoma.

“Right, and finally I did and it was melanoma. They removed it, the whole thing, and I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic. No, honestly. And it’s all fine, but that’s a good friend and it really taught me because I am tanorexic. I love the sun, I really do,” Cohen told his friend about the spot. “But just be careful. And I of course thought that that kind of thing would ever happen to me and it will change my relationship to the sun. But you really helped me out there. And thank you for staying on me.”

Cohen added: “Well, I’m just really grateful that you did that, so everybody check yourself. The lip heals very well. I really had a chunk removed out of it.”

Ripa quipped in reply, “I’m glad to see that all that money I spent visiting dermatologists was good for something because I essentially, at this point, am a dermatologist. I’m an amateur — It’s the third time I’ve picked out skin cancer on my friends.”

Live with Kelly airs weekdays (check local listings).
