Disney has axed Girl Meets World after just two seasons.
The show was a spin-off of the popular 90s show, Boy Meets World, which starred Ben Savage. The spin-off started out with strong ratings, but it was not able to hold its own like the original.
“It is with incredible pride in our work and complete sadness that things end, that I report to this wonderful audience that our show is over,” the @GMWwriters account tweeted Wednesday. “I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes.”
The Twitter account, which is rumored to be run by showrunner Michael Jacobs, continued: “We leave you with three incredible souvenirs of a show we couldn’t be more proud of. As I look back I can tell you with absolute certainty – We gave you our best.”
The show’s three final episodes will air this January. The series stars Peyton Meyer as Lucas Friar.
Girl Meets World airs Fridays at 8:30 p.m. ET on Disney Channel.
Ben Savage, Will Friedle, William Russ, Betsy Randle, Lindsay Ridgeway, William Daniels, Danielle Fishel, and Rider Strong, all posed for the photo.
Ben Savage reminisced about the show and why it left such an impact.
“People saw it from the very beginning, when Cory and Topanga were hanging out and playing basketball with a pair of socks. The Cory-Topanga relationship is something that’s very special to people who grew up with the show.”
In other news, cast member Rider Strong will be tying the knot today (Oct. 20) to longtime girlfriend Alexandra Barreto in Oregon. The couple have been dating since 2006.
The Boy Meets World spin-off, Girl Meet World, is set to air sometime in 2014.
