Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd are the latest celebrities to join the cast of the upcoming James Brown biopic, Get on Up.
Scott will play one James Brown’s wives, but it is unknown at this time which one she will take on. The late legendary singer was married three times —Velma Warren in 1953, Deidre Jenkins in 1970, Adrienne Lois Rodriguez in 1984.
Get On Up will cover about 30-years of Brown’s life; from his early life, to his rise to fame, domestic violence to his peak years in the 1970s, to his struggles with addiction, and and his financial and domestic violence issues.
Viola Davis will play Brown’s mother, Susie and Octavia Spencer will play his aunt, Anne Tunney.
Producers and directors have decided to shoot the film in Mississippi, including filming at the Mississippi Coliseum on the state fairgrounds, where Brown performed a concert in February 1969.
Production on the film begins sometime this fall, with the movie opening in theaters on Friday, October 17, 2014.
the film will follow James Brown’s rise from poverty in Georgia to becoming a world-famous musician. Brown brought the world such hits as, “Try Me,” “The Payback,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” and “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” just to name a few. The singer died in 2006 at age 73.
Boseman was chosen from a long list of actors who wanted the role. He was given an offer after the film was officially greenlit.
