The Rocky franchise is alive and kicking.
A spin-off movie of the franchise is in the works an Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan could play the titular role.
The movie, titled Creed, will focus on Apollo Creed’s grandson (Jordan) who has the same cat-like reflexes and instincts that his grandfather had. As Creed considers getting into the ring, he turns to Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to mentor and train him. At this point, Balboa is now retired and is not involved in boxing at all.
Rocky fans will remember that Apollo Creed died in the ring in Rocky IV at the hands of Russian boxer Drago.
MGM, who is behind the film, has set its sights on Ryan Coogler to direct and co-write with Aaron Covington. Coogler recently directed Jordan on the movie Fruitvale Station.
According to Deadline, Coogler intends to plug back into the mythology of the first three Rocky flicks and then move the story forward.
Jordan is currently in-talks to take on the role of Creed. The deal is being finalized by WME, which reps Coogler, Jordan and Stallone.
